The liver is located in the right abdomen under the diaphragm. It is the biggest gland in our body with the dark red color. An adult's liver weighs approximately two kilograms. It is called a secretory organ because it secretes bile.
Bile which is produced in the liver will be deposited in a gallbladder and passed to the doudenum through the bile duct. Bile contains waste products from
red blood cells which are decomposed in the spleen.
Besides being an excretory organ, the liver also serves other very important functions to human beings:

  1. Storing sugar in the form of glycogen
  2. Regulating sugar content in the blood
  3. Neutralizing poisons that enter the body
  4. Place for reproduction of prothrombin and fibrinogen
  5. Place for alteration of provitamin A to vitamin A
  6. Place for urea formation
Liver disorders
The liver may have some disorders such as:

  • Jaundice
    The bile duct of jaundiced people is clogged up so bile cannot be transported into the duodenum. The bile goes into the blood, turning the color yellowish. As there are blood vessels all over the body, the body will also appear yellowish.
  • Hepatitis
    Hepatitis is inflammation of the liver which is caused by viruses. There are many hepatitis viruses, such as hepatitis A and B. Hepatitis B is more severe than hepatitis A and it may contagious through contact with blood or other bodey fluid. Hepatitis A sufferers are usually infected from contaminated foods.
  • Diabetes mellitus
    Diabetes mellitus is a disease that shows the increase of glucose concentration in the blood, presence of glucose in urine, and excessive urin production. The sufferer often tends to want urinate more frequently, always feels thirsty, and tends to eat excessively. There are two types of diabetes, which are, type 1 and type 2.
    Diabetes mellitus type 1 develops rapidly and typically attacks those under 20 years of age. The sufferers will carry the diabetes of their entire life. The need regular injections of insulin.
    Diabetes mellitus type 2 usually affects people more than 40 years old, especially those who are overweight. This disease occurs because there is less secretion of insulin or cells in the body cannot react with a normal concentration of insulin.
