- Protection
The skin protects body from damage due to collisions, chemical subtances, bacterial attacks, and sunlight. Wounded or scarred skin is vulnerable to infections. - Sensory organ
The ends of the sensory nerves are present inside the skin, so we can feel heat, cold and pain. - Storage for excessive fat
Fat is stored in the adipose tissue in the skin. People who have a lot of fat reserves (overweight people) may endure cold weather better than skinny people because the fat reserves can be burnt to produce energy and heat to overcome the cold weather. - Place for vitamin D production
Vitamin D is necessary for the formation of bone. Provitamin D is present under the skin. With the help of ultraviolet radiation abundantly available from sunlight in the morning, provitamin D can be altered to Vitamin D.
When the body temperature gets higher, blood vessels beneath the skin will dilate and release heat to the air. Sweat glands produce sweat on the skin's surface. Sweat will vaporize and release heat out of the body so that is temperature gets lower. In the cold weather, sweat glands do not produce sweat and blodd vessel shrink in order to minimize heat emission from the body.
