Charles Darwin (1809-1882)
Presented a theory of natural selection in 1859
The continuity of life of a certain organism is influenced by food, predators, parasites and epidemic diseases. All organisms need food. Food comes from the environment which is limited. However, organisms always reproduce so that they increase yhe pupulation. This population increase will cause competition among those living in the same area. This is called interspecific competition. Such competition can have the following results:
  1. Strong members of the population will win and keep living in that area
  2. Weaker members of the population will die or leave to find a new environment
If a certain population goes to another area which is different from their original area, then there will be two possible outcomes, they are:
  1. Members of population will not adapt to the new environment and will die
  2. Members of the population will adapt to the new environment and will stay alive.
The competition process among members of a population in the above situation is called natural selection. Natural selection is a selection of pupulation members suitable for a new condition. The theory of natural selection was develoved by Charles Darwin in 1859. Natural selection can cause the extinction or the emergence of a species.
