Maybe you have seen seeds of rambutan (Nephelium), mango, oranges, or durian that have just grown. If you plant those seeds, you have to wait for a long time to get the fruit; this could be 4 years, 5 years or more. Besides, the fruit will not exactly have the same taste as the parents plant. However, by air layering, ground layering, or cutting, you will get the fruits quicker with the taste exactly the same as its parent plant.

Artificial vegetative propagation also has disadvantages. Air layered plants and cutting plants in general have a not very strong root system. The plants may be collapse in certain ages. Besides, artificial vegetative propagation from a parent plant produces fewer new individual plants. The parent plant will suffer if its branches are air layered too much.
